Begeleiding: Dhivan en Silavadin

Ānāpāṇasati means mindfulness with breathing in sixteen stages. The Ānāpāṇasati sutta is a short text that is the source of the well-known mindfulness of breathing practice, incorporating awareness of body, feelings and mind, and extending to liberation and insight. It really is a complete system of meditation, and it goes back to the Buddha, who is said to have become awakened practising this way.

On this retreat, we will explore the sixteen stages of the sutta through which the Buddha describes a practical, progressive path from first contact with the breath, to the elements of dhyana, contemplation of the laksanas, and the reflections that support the arising of awakening. In simple and accessible language, the sutta brings together samatha and vipassana practice. Despite its depth, it is accessible to all levels of meditation experience. The retreat will involve some study of the Buddha’s teaching on ānāpāṇasati, but will mostly be a chance for silent meditation practice in the supportive conditions of communal retreat.

Dhivan was ordained in 2004, and took the ānāpāṇasati practice instead of a sādhana. He has been a university lecturer in Buddhist Studies and philosophy, and helps run Scholars Retreats and Philosophy Symposiums at Adhisthana retreat centre in the UK. His book This Being, That Becomes: the Buddha’s Teaching on Conditionality was published by Windhorse in 2011.

Silavadin was ordained in 2016. He was a care-worker for many years, studied philosophy, and lives in the Boeddhawierde, a retreat centre in the north of the Netherlands.
